Chapter 9 Self-Transformation

The mid-point of the century would find Krishna back on Indian ground at the start of what would be a turbulent lecture tour. In November and December 1949 he gave three talks at Rajahmundy, north of Madras, and a fourth in Madras. During one talk he was challenged over the question of self-transformation creating world transformation for peace. Krishna tackled it head on, although the questioner may not have been satisfied with his answer. You are the world, Krishna pointed out. In transforming yourself you produced a transformation in society. He wasn’t talking propaganda, he said, but fact. One man couldn’t change the world but this man and he could change it together. When they found “truth”, it would dissolve the miseries of the world.[dccxv]

At New Year Krishna was in Colombo where he was giving a series of talks running from Christmas Day through to 22 January, as well as two radio broadcasts. In University College, Colombo Krishna faced heckling as he began to speak, a rare occurrence at any of his talks, since an expectant hush would normally fall as he ascended any podium. In the face of this reception Krishna smiled and asked what they wanted. To cries of, “Are you the Christ?”Krishna departed from his usual subjects and shared with the crowd the “poignant” story of his life, including his loneliness and longings, his struggles and searching, and finally his realisations. Applause, cheers and even tears were the immediate response, as the audience repented their aggressive mood. An academic who gave an account of the talk said Krishna had a radiant spiritual personality without the need for organisation, ceremony, priest, puja, darshan, magic or mystery.[dccxvi]

The Australian radio producer, Donald Ingram Smith, first met Krishnamurti in Colombo in 1949 and it was a self-revelation for him. Ingram Smith, who had been studying Krishna’s verbatim talks for years, approached ABC Radio’s Director of Talks in Sydney, BH Molesworth, about going to interview the Prime Minister of the newly-independent Sri Lanka, as well as Krishnamurti. Ingram Smith thought he was doing well to have organised some dub editing facilities with Radio Sri Lanka, but no sooner had he arrived than he was offered a job as Controller of Programs, so his entrée was assured thereafter. Ingram Smith was aged thirty eight and he’d landed the best job he’d ever had but he walked away from it five months later to follow Krishnamurti around India, then to Rome, France, England and the United States.[dccxvii]

Ingram Smith says that his first meeting with Krishna was when he visited to make arrangements for a talk to be broadcast. Ingram Smith “fumbled” about, didn’t know whether to shake hands or not, asked Krishna whether he had a script, which he had, and in picking it up they spilled the unnumbered pages on the floor.
